"If Only," Destiny, and Terabithia: A Reflection on Regret

Often in life, we regret our decisions. We think, "If only I had chosen that path back then," then perhaps today we would be somewhere else. This isn’t just about love; it is about everything we dwell on—whether it is friendship, a career, or any object we desire to possess. But what we think or what we want to achieve doesn't matter if life doesn't agree to it. Only what life wants happens. We often connect this "Life" to Destiny, Fate, or God. The movie Bridge to Terabithia reflects this philosophy perfectly.

It is the story of Jess, a lonely and lost boy who lives entirely in his paintings and his thoughts. His life changes when Leslie, his new neighbor, arrives. Their friendship begins unexpectedly when Leslie beats all the boys in a school race. Despite Jess's initial hesitation, Leslie becomes his primary support system as his family faces financial struggles. During their friendship, they discover an unknown place in the woods. To cross the creek, they use an old rope hanging from a tree, naming their secret sanctuary Terabithia. Here, they get lost in an imaginary world full of freedom and magic—the kind of life many of us wish for as we grow up.

But as the story reminds us, life doesn’t always follow our plans. Everything changes when Jess's music teacher invites him to a museum. Jess chooses to go alone, wanting to enjoy the moment without calling Leslie. Upon his return, he learns the devastating truth: in his absence, Leslie tried to cross the creek alone. The old rope snapped, and she did not survive. Jess is shattered by the weight of a single decision, haunted by the thought: "If only I had called her..."

I believe that whatever happens is written in our destiny. Whether we make a wrong decision or a right one, the results—failure, loss, or success—are pre-documented. We are simply following a script. Accepting that the past cannot be changed is our greatest strength. Once we stop fighting what has already happened, our lives can change in ways we never imagined. While regret is a human instinct, realizing that life moves according to its own will helps us find peace with the choices we made.

This post isn't just a movie review; it is a reflection of our own lives and the paths we walk. Acceptance is not a sign of weakness, but the ultimate form of resilience. If this story touched you or reminded you of your own journey, feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.
