Movie Review & Recommendation: Gifted (2017)

Recently, I watched a very emotional movie called Gifted, which was released in 2017. The story revolves around an uncle and his young niece. The niece is a special child, just like her mother. Her mom was a brilliant mathematician, and the little girl shares that same extraordinary talent. The story begins when the child's mother tragically commits suicide, leaving her daughter in her uncle's care. I especially loved the realistic and beautiful bond showcased between the little girl and her uncle.

Eventually, the girl's grandmother finds out about her special abilities—a grandmother who hadn't even seen the child in seven years. After that, an intense custody battle in court begins between the grandmother and the uncle. During this time, the film does a great job of showing the emotional condition and perspective of the child, which I really liked. The best moments in the movie are definitely the tender, everyday scenes between the girl and her uncle; I loved those the most.

On one hand, the grandmother wants her to go to a big, specialized school and spend her entire day doing math. On the other hand, the uncle wants to fulfill his sister's final wish, which was for her daughter to experience a normal childhood just like any regular kid. The movie beautifully highlights how important it is for a child to have a normal upbringing, to play with kids their own age, and to make friends.

The movie is called Gifted, and you can easily watch it on Netflix in Hindi. I think this is a great watch for anyone who loves emotional family stories.

Thanks for reading. Harsh Goyal signing off.
